The article examines the psychological characteristics of adaptability among unemployed individuals in the context of contemporary socio-economic challenges. Job loss is conceptualized as a multidimensional crisis that affects the cognitive, emotional, motivational, and behavioral mechanisms of personality functioning and requires the mobilisation of both internal and external resources. The theoretical framework of the study is grounded in systemic, resource-oriented, cognitive-behavioural, and gender approaches, which together make it possible to conceptualize adaptability as an integrative construct sensitive to social, cultural, and role-specific determinants. The aim of the article is to conduct an empirical investigation of the adaptability of unemployed individuals and to identify gender-specific differences in the structure of this phenomenon. The sample consisted of 75 participants aged 35–45 who were registered at an employment centre. To assess adaptation-related characteristics, the multilevel personality questionnaire “Adaptability” (MLO-AM) was used, enabling a comprehensive evaluation of psychological resilience, emotional stability, communicative competence, and behavioural regulation under conditions of life stress. The results indicate that the largest proportion of respondents demonstrate a medium level of adaptability, which reflects the relative preservation of core regulatory mechanisms during a professional crisis. At the same time, a subgroup of individuals with low and very low adaptability was identified, indicating an increased risk of maladaptation. Certain gender differences were observed in the structure of adaptability: men more frequently exhibited high and medium levels of adaptability, whereas women showed a greater prevalence of lower levels, which may reflect distinct dynamics of emotional and regulatory processes during unemployment. The findings highlight the polystructural nature of adaptability among unemployed individuals and underscore the need for differentiated psychological support programmes aimed at strengthening resource potential and preventing maladaptation in situations of professional uncertainty.
