The article examines the taxation of the Ukrainian banking sector under conditions of war-induced economic shocks and its impact on banks’ profitability, risk exposure, and capital stability. The purpose of the study is to provide a comprehensive analysis of how increased fiscal pressure, including the rise in the corporate profit tax rate, influences the financial performance, risk profile, and structural transformation of the banking sector in Ukraine during the period of military and macroeconomic instability. The research employs a combination of analytical, synthetic, and comparative methods, as well as coefficient-based financial analysis to assess profitability, efficiency, and risk indicators of the banking system. The empirical part of the study is based on the analysis of financial statements and sectoral aggregates for 2021–2025, focusing on income and expense dynamics, profitability ratios, tax burden indicators, and capital adequacy trends. The results indicate a significant transformation of the banking sector’s business model under wartime conditions, characterized by a shift toward income generation from government securities and central bank instruments rather than traditional credit intermediation. This structural change has led to the emergence of a quasi fiscal profitability model, where banks’ earnings are increasingly dependent on sovereign debt instruments. The findings also demonstrate that higher taxation, particularly the increase of the corporate income tax rate to 50%, intensifies pressure on banks’ retained earnings and weakens internal capital accumulation capacity, thereby limiting long-term resilience. The study shows that elevated fiscal and operational risks, combined with increased credit risk provisioning, affect banks’ profitability and efficiency, while simultaneously encouraging portfolio reallocation toward lower-risk sovereign assets. This behavior contributes to credit contraction in the private sector and reinforces the crowding-out effect. Furthermore, the growing interdependence between banks and the sovereign exacerbates systemic vulnerabilities, strengthening the bank–sovereign nexus under conditions of fiscal andmonetary dominance. The article concludes that excessive fiscal pressure on the banking sector in wartime may undermine credit activity and slow economic recovery, despite short-term fiscal gains. The practical implications of the study highlight the need for balanced taxation policies, targeted credit support mechanisms, and regulatory instruments aimed at preserving financial stability while maintaining lending capacity to the real economy.
