Як відомо, головною метою освітнього процесу є приріст якісно нового знання, під котрим, насамперед, розуміють специфічний продукт когнітивної діяльності людини. Натомість, в теорії та практиці сучасного інформативного суспільства, і це звісно не може не позначитись на сучасних освітніх технологіях, дедалі більшого значення набувають математичні методи опису та виміру інформації, запропоновані американським математиком, «батьком теорії інформації» К. Шенноном. В них визначальними є саме кількісні характеристики інформації, байдужі до її якості, тобто змісту, що веде лише до збільшення самих комунікативних актів
